Circle of Out-takes

Distance

We tour the fields to check the sheep.
You walk beside me, but your mind
walks other fields.  Another slope
I cannot see calls you to flee
beyond these hills.  The western wind
whispers to you, but not to me.
I stop my words you do not hear.
Fog tops the hill; its fingers rake
the grass with mist it brought from the sea.
I dare not ask you where you are;
your face is pale, your eyes are bleak.
The sheep are bedding on the hill
as we turn homeward.  The night comes black
with absent stars and brooding chill.
