Dragons in the Gum Tree Grove
Fourth Narration
It could not last, our idyll contrived
between two people so unlike
in the way they looked out at the world.
I saw dragons in the gum trees
and unicorns in the hillside pastures.
You saw buzzards in the grove
and sheep grazing along the fences.
I saw elves hold court in the meadows.
Your elves sold cookies on television.
In the end we built more walls than bridges.
